Squirrel Defends His Buddy Against Scavenging Crows

I have black and brown squirrels in my backyard, and I love to watch them climbing the trees and munching on nuts. One day I saw two of them rolling around in the grass and having a good old time. My dogs and cats especially enjoy watching them from the window, and sometimes the squirrels even come up to the back sliding glass door and hang out on the patio.

I came across this video of a squirrel who is obviously protecting his dead buddy from scavenging crows. Although squirrels are mischievous rodents, they definitely have some cognitive functioning that I wasn't even aware of. It's sad that this squirrel lost his friend, and it makes me want to be even more cautious while driving to prevent road kill.
